Buffalo, NY – Special Olympics New York and the New York Achieving a Better Life Experience Program (NY ABLE) are pleased to congratulate Shawn McDonald on being named the March 2025 Athlete of the Month.

Shawn isn't just an athlete with Special Olympics NY—he's a coach, too. In just a single year with the Buffalo Yellow Jackets, Shawn has moved beyond his sport of choice, bowling, and added softball and basketball to his repertoire. He has an innate ability to motivate, encourage, and bring out the best qualities in his fellow athletes. Shawn is always there when they need him.

“We are so proud of Shawn for his dedication and hard work,” said Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “Being an athlete requires amazing discipline, and being a coach in addition is an even greater feat. Shawn has certainly earned this honor, and we’re glad to give it to him.”

To earn eligibility for Athlete of the Month, athletes must exhibit leadership in one or more of the following: Achievement in Sport, Sportsmanship (respect for coaches, officials, opponents, teammates), Character (playing by the rules, honesty, integrity), and Commitment to Improvement and Perseverance.

Athletes are considered for this honor based upon recommendations by Special Olympics New York staff, coaches, fans, and the community. To recommend a Special Olympics New York athlete, click here.
