Troy USBC Team Places First; Syracuse, Kingston, Buffalo, Schenectady Bowlers Triumph

JUNE 16, 2016 – Mastropietro Concrete (Troy USBC) captured the Handicap Team first prize of $3,350 at the 92nd NYS Open Championships, which took place from April 16 through May 15 at AMF Pin-O-Rama Lanes in Utica.

"We've been bowling for quite some time, and never really won too much," said Marc Scelsi, team captain.

Scelsi's teammates were John Zecca, John Ellison, Michael Scelsi (his father) and Jason Mastropietro, who had to be replaced after the first game due to an arm injury. Ed Horvath Sr. of Utica filled in and the team posted 3,617 with handicap on the tournament's opening weekend.

The score held up, edging Bowlievers (New York City USBC) by seven pins. The tournament drew 229 teams – 29 more than last year.

Other event champions are as follows:

Scratch Team – El Paso Delay (Rochester USBC), 3,547. This is the team's second straight scratch title, and Steve Meyer's third straight. Other members are Dan Vick, Sarah Germano, Derek Magno and William Hasiotis.

Handicap & Scratch Doubles – R.J. Blanchard and Jim Zimmerman (Syracuse USBC BA) led the way with 1,541 – all scratch – to lead both divisions. They split $1,650.

Handicap Singles – Paul Scism Jr. (Kingston NY USBC BA) topped the list with 826 – 810 scratch – to earn the $800 first prize.

Scratch Singles – Anthony Palumbo (Schenectady USBC BA) rolled 822 scratch to place first. He won $700 as his score was the second best in the Handicap division.

Handicap All-Events – George Johnson (Kingston NY USBC BA) posted 2,331 with handicap – 2,187 scratch – to claim the $400 first prize.

Scratch All-Events – Michael Zarcone (Greater Buffalo USBC) earned a paid entry to the 2017 USBC Masters by virtue of his 2,294 score, which was seven pins more than hometown favorite Ray Cyr Jr. Zarcone's total was second in the Handicap division, earning him $300.
